  Genalguacil Village - A Special Place  
     

Nestling in the foothills of the lofty Sierra del Bermeja and overlooking the fertile Genal river valley lies the magical 'village museum' of Genalguacil. From its perch 600 meters above sea level, the village commands a stunning view of the surrounding villages and mountains and spends most of the day bathed in glorious sunshine.
        
   This beautiful Pueblo Blanco seems frozen in time. In many ways, little has changed since the Moors were ousted in the sixteenth century. Old men still load up their mules and donkeys in the morning and ride off to tend to their farms, as they have done for generations. Other villagers whitewash their houses, sweep the narrow, cobbled streets, tend to their rooftop flower gardens or just gossip about the latest news. The labyrinthine streets are ablaze with climbing roses, bougainvillea and many other flowering plants.  
        

Adding to the striking white houses with terracotta roofs are the numerous sculptures made from wood, stone and ceramic which are found throughout the village. These are the product of several 'Encuentras del Arte'. Every two years for the past ten, a group of artists has been invited to the village to create a piece of artwork. They are given accommodation and meals, plus materials from local sources. Their finished piece is left in the village. Presently, over 40 pieces of artwork are scattered throughout the village, making it practically an open-air art gallery.
          
     
Things to Do
In every direction there are wonderful views and walks for every visitor - from those who enjoy a casual stroll to the more serious country walker. The countryside is largely forested with plantations of pine, chestnut and cork oak trees. Paths and mule tracks criss-cross streams and rivers. In the spring and summer, over one hundred different varieties of wildflowers can be seen, as well as many different species of birds - not least the rare kingfisher and the splendid Griffin Vulture.

The village has two restaurants, a bar where old men play cards and dominoes, a weekend pub/disco open till the early morning, and several shops to buy food and other necessities. Banking facilities are available at the Unicaja, and there is a pharmacy and part-time medical clinic.

The largest town in the area - Ronda - is well worth a visit, and a mere hour's drive through beautiful countryside will bring you there. Perched high on a plateau, Ronda has seen many different societies come and go - both Arabic and European. It has the oldest bullring in Spain and literally hundreds of monuments, as well as numerous bars and restaurants.

The nearby 'Pileta' caves are quite remarkable, holding paintings and etchings that date back to between five and eight thousand years. The neighbouring area is also home to a number of natural parks, namely the Sierra de Grazelma, Parque de Alconoques, Sierra de las Nieves and Castellar de Frontera.

The Mediterranean town of Estepona is also about an hour away by car, offering all the amenities and luxuries of the Costa Del Sol, while the Atlantic coast - beginning at the town of Tarifa - is slightly further away, about 2 ½ hours drive. Between the two lies the port town of Algeciras, gateway to Morocco. A stone's throw away from Algeciras lies the tiny British enclave of Gibraltar, it's enormous rock visible for miles around.

Genalguacil - Un Paraje Singular 
Ubicado en las estribaciones de la elevada Sierra de Bermeja y dominando el fértil valle del río Genal se encuentra el mágico "pueblo-museo" de Genalguacil. Desde sus elevados 600 metros sobre el nivel del mar, desde el pueblo se disfruta de una asombrosa vista de los pueblos y montañas que lo rodean, estando bañado durante la mayor parte del día por la magnífica luz del sol. 
Este precioso Pueblo Blanco parece haberse quedado anclado en el pasado. En muchos aspectos, pocas cosas han cambiado desde la expulsión de los Moriscos en el siglo dieciséis. Los ancianos aún cargan sus mulas y burros por la mañana rumbo a sus granjas, como han hecho durante muchas generaciones. Otros lugareños encalan sus casas, barren las estrechas callejuelas de adoquines, cuidan sus jardines de flores en la azotea o simplemente chismorrean sobre los últimos sucesos acontecidos. Las entramadas callejuelas resplandecen con rosas que trepan por las paredes, buganvillas y muchas otras macetas de flores. 
Además de las asombrosas casitas blancas con techos de terracota, a lo largo del pueblo se pueden admirar numerosas esculturas hechas en madera, piedra y barro, realizadas durante los numerosos "Encuentros de Arte" que han tenido lugar cada dos años durante los últimos diez años. Para ello, se invitó a un grupo de artistas con la finalidad de crear una pieza artística, a los que se les proporcionó alojamiento, manutención y materiales provenientes de recursos locales. A cambio, su obra permanece en el pueblo. En la actualidad, más de 40 obras se encuentran esparcidas por el pueblo, lo que lo convierte en una galería de arte al aire libre. 
Qué hacer 
Allá donde mire puede disfrutar de maravillosas vistas y lugares de paseo para todos los visitantes - desde aquellos que disfrutan de un paseo informal hasta el senderista más acérrimo. El campo se encuentran grandes plantaciones de pino, castaños y alcornoques. Las veredas y caminos de burros se entrecruzan con arroyos y ríos. Durante la primavera y verano, pueden observarse más de un centenar de variedades diferentes de flores silvestres así como numerosas variedades diferentes de aves -nada menos que el exuberante martín pescador y el espléndido Buitre Pardo. 
Hay dos restaurantes en el pueblo, un bar donde los ancianos juegan a las cartas y a dominó, un discopub abierto los fines de semana hasta el amanecer y diversas tiendas donde comprar alimentos y otros productos. Hay también una caja de ahorros Unicaja, una farmacia y una clínica médica abierta a tiempo parcial. 
La localidad más grande de la zona, Ronda, merece ser visitada. Puede llegar allí tras conducir apenas una hora a través de bellos paisajes. Ubicada en alto sobre una meseta, Ronda ha visto ir y venir diversas civilizaciones -árabes y europeas. Allí se puede visitar la plaza de toros más antigua de España así como cientos de monumentos y numerosos bares y restaurantes. 
Cerca de Ronda, en La Cueva de la Pileta pueden admirarse excepcionales grabados y pinturas holding y grabados que se remontan a entre cinco y ocho mil años. La zona circundante también aloja diversos parques naturales, en concreto la Sierra de Grazalema, Parque de Alcornocales, Sierra de las Nieves y Castellar de la Frontera. 
La ciudad mediterránea de Estepona, que se encuentra también a una hora en coche, ofrece todos los servicios y lujos de la Costa del Sol, mientras que la costa atlántica -que comienza en la ciudad de Tarifa- se encuentra un poco más alejada, aproximadamente a 2 ½ horas en coche. Entre ambas se encuentra ubicada la ciudad portuaria de Algeciras, puerta de acceso a Marruecos. A un tiro de piedra de Algeciras se encuentra el pequeño enclave británico de Gibraltar, cuya enorme roca puede verse desde millas alrededor.
